Skin Cancer Surgery in Melbourne

In Australia, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer accounting for 80% of all new diagnoses

Skin cancer affects more Australians than any other cancer. In Victoria alone, over 350 people die a year from skin cancer.¹ The three most common forms of skin cancer’s include:

  • basal cell carcinoma (BCC)
  • squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)
  • melanomas

Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun is the most common cause of skin cancers but UV exposure from tanning beds, welding equipment, and industrial applications has also been shown to cause skin cancers. Exposure to chemicals, such as arsenic, and coal tar, over a long period of time can also lead to the formation of some skin cancers.

Signs you might have skin cancer

There are a number of signs that may be indicators of skin cancer. Five of those signs are:

  1. New moles
  2. An outline of a mole that becomes irregular
  3. Moles which increase in size
  4. A spot that is varied in colour or that changes from brown to black
  5. A spot which develops a lump within it or becomes raised

This is by no means a comprehensive list, and it is recommended you visit your GP if you are worried about any spots or moles that seem unusual.
